FORUM-ASIA Defending in Numbers 2023-2024 Report

Designed the sixth edition of FORUM-ASIA's biennial flagship publication documenting the systematic harassment of human rights defenders across 23 Asian countries. The design challenge was presenting 1,577 cases of human rights violations—including judicial harassment, transnational repression, digital censorship, and violent crackdowns—in a way that honored both data integrity and human dignity. The publication required balancing dense statistical analysis, national context summaries, and emblematic case studies while maintaining accessibility for diverse audiences including policymakers, civil society organizations, and international human rights bodies. The design solution employed clean typographic hierarchy, data visualization that humanized statistics, and visual pacing that allowed difficult content to breathe. Drawing on contributions from partners in Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka, the 130+ page report successfully transformed complex documentation into a compelling call to action—celebrating the courage of environmental activists, women human rights defenders, students, and pro-democracy advocates while clearly mapping violations, perpetrators, and the urgent need for international solidarity in an era of authoritarian resurgence.
